Gums Bleeding When You Brush? Here's What That Usually Means

A little blood when you brush or floss is common enough that many people assume it's normal — a sign of brushing too hard, or just how their gums are. In most cases, it's actually an early sign of gum inflammation, known as gingivitis, and it's worth paying attention to rather than brushing off.

Gingivitis develops when plaque builds up along the gumline and isn't cleaned away thoroughly enough by brushing alone. The gums respond by becoming inflamed, which is what causes the bleeding, redness, or mild swelling. The encouraging part: at this early stage, it's very reversible with a proper professional clean and better daily habits.

Left unaddressed over a longer period, gum inflammation can progress to more advanced gum disease, which affects the bone and tissue supporting the teeth — a much harder problem to fully reverse. This is why bleeding gums are worth mentioning at your next check-up rather than waiting for them to become a bigger issue.

If you're noticing bleeding regularly, it's a good idea to get it looked at rather than simply switching to a softer toothbrush and hoping it resolves on its own.
